Michael Barzelay’s academic career spans nearly 25 years. He currently holds LSE’s first professorial chair in public management. He co-directs the Department of Management’s new MSc Public Management and Governance and is a Research Associate of LSE’s Centre for Analysis of Risk and Regulation. Prof. Barzelay serves as the founding executive director of the Center for Transformation and Strategic Initiatives, a Washington, D.C. based non-profit organization, whose mission is to improve the practice of transforming public service organizations through research, education, and advisory work. In addition, he co-edits Governance: An International Journal of Policy, Institutions, and Administration, published by Blackwell. His earliest academic research resulted in The Politicized Market Economy: Alcohol in Brazil’s Energy Strategy (University of California Press, 1986), which traced the origins and evolution of the country’s alcohol fuel program and analyzed the economic efficiency of alcohol production and distribution, as a gasoline substitute. His latest book is Preparing for the Future: Strategic Planning in the U.S. Air Force (Brookings, 2003), which received the Brownlow Book Award of the U.S. National Academy of Public Administration. Professor Barzelay’s first university degree was taken at Stanford University, where he followed a self-designed inter-disciplinary major in Studies of the Developing World. He earned a Masters in Public and Private Management at Yale School of Organization and Management and a PhD in Political Science from the Yale Graduate School. Before joining LSE in 1995, Professor Barzelay was Associate Professor of Public Policy at Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. He consults widely, for such organizations as the World Bank and the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health, part of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
