The workshop will discuss recent examples of IDB financed projects illustrating the complexity of sustainability issues, and tools available from the IDB to mitigate adverse impacts and exacerbate positive impacts.

Panelists and Description:  Jean-Marc Aboussouan, Chief of Infrastructure Division, Structured and Corporate Finance Department, Inter-American Development Bank Carlos Contreras, Deputy General Manager, Corporate Finance, Caja Madrid Traditionally Latin America invest less than 2% of regional GDP in infrastructure. During the 2008 & 2009 financial turmoil, private investments in infrastructure shrunk while governments planned fiscal stimulus to off-set a crowding-out effect. In 2010, current economic recovery in the region is not infrastructure-driven, and the region continues to underinvest in this industry while countries like China invest about 9% or 10% of GDP.  Panelist will discuss innovative financial mechanisms to invest in strategic infrastructure projects that can transform national and regional economies, raise competitiveness and create long-term jobs. They will also discuss regional financial trends and steps necessary to increase private and public investments in infrastructure.
