31, agosto 2016

Maryelos Cea

M. Miranda y A. Vidal

Canada to Join China-Led Bank, Signaling Readiness to Bolster Ties

August 31, 2016

Jane Perlez

BEIJING — Canada said on Wednesday that it had applied to join China's version of the World Bank, breaking with previous leaders who had shared United States officials' skepticism of the new Beijing-led lender.

The move came during a five-day trip to China by the prime minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, who is seeking to burnish trade, business and political ties with Beijing. China's relationship with the previous Canadian government had been lukewarm...

At Ports, a Sign of Altered Supply Chains

August 29, 2016

Erica E. Phillips and Robbie Whelan

This summer, dockworkers, truckers and railroads geared up for a surge of retail goods passing through U.S. ports that hasn't occurred.

Imports are flat at major seaports on both coasts heading into peak shipping season, the stretch in late summer and early fall when retailers usually load up on imported toys, clothing and other merchandise to sell to holiday shoppers. If the trend holds, it will be the second year in a row without a traditional peak...

Ford, MIT use Bostonians' cellphone location data for traffic planning

August 29, 2016

Lucas Mearian

By collecting the anonymous cellphone location data from nearly two million Bostonians, MIT and Ford were able to produce near-instant urban mobility patterns that typically cost millions of dollars and take years to build.

The big data experiment holds the promise of more accurate and timely data about urban mobility patterns that can be used to quickly determine whether particular attempts to address local transportation needs are working...

The Quiet Work of a Civil Engineer

August 29, 2016

Bourree Lam

Civil engineering is often called the oldest engineering discipline, as humans have been building roads, bridges, and water ducts for thousands of years. These kinds of infrastructure projects are ones that civil engineers still work on today. The profession is also expected to expand by 8 percent in the next 10 years, as increasing urbanization and an interest in renewable-energy create new projects for civil engineers.

Given the makeup of the field, that raises big social questions. Engineering is the STEM sector where the struggle for female representation is the most pronounced: According to statistics compiled by the Society of Women Engineers, only 12 percent of engineers are female. Further, more than half of the female freshman who sign up to major in engineering end up switching to non-STEM majors by graduation...

Which State is a Big Renewable Energy Pioneer? Texas

August 29, 2016

Bill Spindle and Rebecca Smith

SAN ANTONIO—On a blustery February night, the Texas electricity market hit a milestone. Nearly half the power flowing onto the grid came from wind turbines, a level unimaginable a decade ago in a place better known for its long romance with fossil fuels.

The Lone Star state still embraces its oil and gas, leading a revolution in innovative "fracking" technology. Yet an equally startling energy bonanza here has gone almost...
